Animal Husbandry

Observations in captivity complement collection- and field-based research. The aquarium facilities of the ichthyology section at ZFMK allow the documentation of life coloration, courtship behaviour, investigation of development from the egg to the adult fish, or the investigation of the heritability of external traits.

The aquarium facilities currently consist of 38 tanks, with a total volume of approx. 6000l. Water changes automatically, and the facilities allow an efficient documentation by fotography and video. The actual research focus in the aquarium room is on sailfin silversides from Sulawesi, which are bred over several generations in our lab.
