Info

Besides the large collection of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) there is also material of the closely related order Trichoptera (caddisflies) in curatorial care. The latter group is numerically poorly represented, but also contains valuable type material.

The Lepidoptera collection currently includes more than 2 million specimens and is therefore one of the largest research collections of this insect order in Germany.

Particularly worth mentioning are the large holdings of Chinese butterflies and moths (about 600.000 specimens).

Research includes projects on taxonomy, systematics, zoogeography and phylogeny. In addition to the curator, scientists from around the world use the available resources for their own research. They either borrow material or work personally during a shorter or longer research stay at the collection.
