Research interests

I am interested in the phylogeny of the basal, primary wingless hexapods (Collembola, Protura, Diplura, Archaeognatha, Zygentoma). Springtails (Collembola), as well as coneheads (Protura) and Diplura, are characterized by internal mouthparts. The evolution of this entognathous mouth part morphology has been under long discussion, but a satisfactory explanation is still missing. In addition, there are numerous unsolved questions about the endoskeleton and the evolution of the musculature. Thus, my special interest lies in the inner cephalic morphology of springtails, which I am studying mainly with the aid of high resolution synchrotron-µCT data and their three-dimensional segmentation.
