Profile

Field of work

My scientific interests comprise the taxonomy, faunistics, diversity, aut- / synecology and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. My field experiences comprise collection trips within Europe as well as to Brazil, Gabon, Tanzania and Zambia. Next to more traditional collection based methods (systematics, morphology / anatomy, bioacoustics, phylogenetics, empirical field studies and experiments), I combine genetics and natural history information with recently developed macroecological approaches (species distribution modelling, environmental niche modelling) as well as phylogenetic comparative methods. These techniques allow me to analyse the structure and evolution of species’ environmental niches through space and time in a phylogenetic and biogeographic context, assessments of species’ likely responses to anthropogenic climate change as well as impacts of habitat fragmentation on the genetic architecture of populations.

Research interests

  • Taxonomy, faunistics, aut- / synecology, diversity patterns and conservation of amphibians and reptiles with special focus on tropical amphibian communities
  • Spatial epidemiology of the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytridium dendrobatidis
  • Macroecology / Species Distribution Modelling with focus on climate change impacts as well as structure and evolution of environmental niches
