Towards a future sustainable world where climate, biodiversity, natural resources and human well-being are safeguarded (SustainCBW)
ZFMK Project lead:
Object of research:
biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, anthropogenic land use, socio-economy, Madagascar

Description

Six Leibniz institutes cooperate the joint interdisciplinary project sustainCBW to analyze targets of the SDG, the CBD, and the Paris Agreement with respect to interdependencies that hamper an adequate consideration of biodiversity concerns and to develop solutions for conflicts of interest.

At the ZFMK, we aim to improve the scientific basis for a better integration of biodiversity concerns in the implementation of global conventions and agreements by pinpointing key knowledge gaps. This way, we strive to advance the application relevance of future interdisciplinary projects that focus not only on ecological questions, but also take socio-economic and political aspects into account.

We particularly focus on the threats to terrestrial species (SDG 15) resulting from subsistence farming to end hunger (SDG 2) and from social inequalities (SDG 10) in biodiversity hotspot Madagascar. In context of the slash-and-burn problematic threatening the western dry deciduous forests, we want to identify knowledge gaps that need to be addressed most urgently to improve biodiversity conservation and simultaneously support sustainable development.
