The Rose-ringed Parakeet is one of the world’s most widespread parrot species. Although they originated in parts of Africa and Asia, they have been introduced in Europe and have spread considerably across the continent during the last decades. Recent years have seen particularly rapid growth in breeding colonies, especially in the Rhineland making information on the distribution of sex and age classes relevant for the documentation of population growth.
While adult males and females are easily identified based on the eponymous rosy neck collar, juveniles of both sexes look alike. Thus, in this project we study if there is a way to identify the sexes of juvenile birds based on morphological characteristics.
