Sexing and ageing of Rose-ringed Parakeets (Psittacula krameri)
ZFMK Project lead:
Object of research:

Description

The Rose-ringed Parakeet is one of the world’s most widespread parrot species. Besides it natural range in parts of Africa and Asia, it inhabits Europe for several decades already, including the Rhineland. Particularly during the last years local breeding colonies grew. Therefore, information on the distribution of sex and age classes is relevant for the documentation of population growth.

While adult males and females are easily identified based on the eponymous rosy neck collar, juveniles of both sexes look alike. Thus, in this project we study if there is a way to identify the sexes of juvenile birds on grounds of morphological characters.
