The Mesangat wetlands in eastern Borneo are the first area, which was assigned to a local NGO (now YASIWA) by an international acting oil palm company for sustainable protection and use . The 8000 ha large areal is inhabitat by highly endangered species like Bornean orangutans, Proboscis monkeys, False gavials, Siamese crocodiles and the Bornean River Turtle. In addition, it is so far the worldwide only known area, where both previously mentioned, fish eating crocodile species occur and reproduce sympatrically.
For an improvement of the conservation situation of these species and the region, knowledge about the ichthyofauna as well as the preferred fish species of the crocodiles, especially of the adults, becomes more and more important.
Further institutions involved in the project: Cologne Zoological Garden, YASIWA (local NGO), and the ZGAP.
