AMIBIO (LIFE08 NAT/GR/539; 2010-2013; http://www.amibio-project.eu/): Automatic acoustic monitoring and inventorying of biodiversity. The EU “Best Life-Nature Project” award-winning project was carried out by a Greek-German research consortium. The AMIBIO EU Life+ Biodiversity project aimed to develop an automated system for remote acoustic monitoring of species diversity, using autonomous audio recorders and machine-learning technologies. It specifically sought to detect sound-emitting animal species, including insects, birds, and bats in the Natura 2000 area “Hymettus Mountain”, east of Athens, Greece. The main responsibilities of the ZFMK included the inventorying of species as well as the gathering, identification, archiving, and annotation of their vocalisations in order to build the reference libraries needed for the development of the sound identification software.
