A three-dimensional assessment of bird eggs

Quick facts

Project title:
A three-dimensional assessment of size and shape variability in bird eggs
ZFMK Project lead:
Object of research:

Progress in digital visualisation technology also brought new possibilities to biological research. With the development of CAD technology, computer-based 3D imaging became available to biology where it is mainly applied to morphological studies. In this pilot project we examine bird eggs of the Museum Koenig’s extensive egg collection using a white light scanner, focusing on a large set of clutches of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) and Gull-billed Terns (Gelochelidon nilotica). For the first time, these 3D scans allow comprehensive analyses of external egg characters and provide the basis for thorough comparative studies.
