Description

Progress in digital visualisation technology also brought a new dimension to biological research. With the development of CAD technology, computer-based 3D imaging can now be applied to morphological studies. In this pilot project, we examine bird eggs from the Museum Koenig’s extensive egg collection using a white light scanner, focusing on a large set of clutches of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) and Gull-billed Terns (Gelochelidon nilotica). For the first time, these 3D scans allow comprehensive analyses of external egg characteristics and provide the basis for more thorough comparative studies.
