Abstract:

Article 16.4. of the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999) requires that the fixation of namebearing types for a new species to be explicit: “Every new specific and subspecific name published after 1999, except a new replacement name…, must be accompanied in the original publication 16.4.1. by the explicit fixation of a holotype,…..and 16.4.2. where the holotype or syntypes are extant specimens, by a statement of intent that they will be (or are) deposited in a collection and a statement indicating the name and location of that collection.”

That means that for species described after 1999, the holotype must be finally deposited in a collection and it is obligatory to indicate the name of the collection and where it is located.
When Mangit & Yerli (2018) described Alburnus kurui, they designated "HUSal 480301" as the holotype of this new species. But it was not mentioned in their publication, which collection HUSal might be and where this collection is located. This makes the holotype of A. kurui invalid as it does not fulfill the requirements of Article 16.4.2, mentioned above. Therefore, the name A. kurui Mangit & Yerli, 2018 is not available from the original description.

Freyhof et al. (2018) worked on A. kurui Mangit & Yerli, 2018 and treated it as a junior homonym of Leuciscus kurui Bogutskaya, 1995 when this second species is placed in Alburnus. These authors re-described A. kurui Mangit & Yerli, 2018 and provided a new replacement name for it: A. carianorum. But it escaped the attention of Freyhof et al. (2018) that Mangit & Yerli (2018) did not fulfill the requirements of Article 16.4.2. by not indicating the name and the location of the collection. The creation of a new replacement name implies that the types of the replaced name retain exactly the same status for the replacement name. As there is no validly designated holotype for A. kurui, there is consequently no validly designated holotype for Alburnus carianorum by Freyhof et al. (2018), and thus A. carianorum is not available. To establish an available name for the bleak of the south-eastern Aegean basin, we designate here a holotype for Alburnus carianorum, which is described based on data already published by Freyhof et al. (2018). This action makes the name Alburnus carianorum valid from the present study.
