Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) is one of the most important personalities from the time of the Early Enlightment. As daughter of the engraver und publisher Matthäus Merian the Elder her artistic talent was encouraged from the beginning. At the same time, she discovered the fascinating world of insects. She consistendly pursued the goal of following the metamorphosis of the beloved butterflies, documenting the graphically and publishing book about it. She is one of the pioneers of an ecologically oriented entomology.
