Curriculum Vitae
Prof. Dr. Johann Wolfgang Waegele (* 1953, Neuwied, Germany) grew up in South America and attended a German school in Bogotá (Colombia). Fascinated by the tropical fauna he decided to study marine zoology in Kiel (Germany), where he got his Ph.D. for a thesis on the phylogeny of marine isopods (Crustacea: Anthuridea). As head of the department of Systematic Zoology at the University of Bochum he promoted molecular phylogenetics of neritic and abyssal crustaceans from Antarctica and the deep sea of the South Atlantic Ocean. He moved recently to the former capital Bonn where he accepted the position of director of the zoological research institute and museum "Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig".
Current fields of interest are the taxonomy of Isopoda, phylogeny, biogeography, and evolution of ways of life of crustaceans, molecular systematics. methods for phylogeny inference and for the acceleration of biodiversity assessment.
- October 1972 - July 1977: Study at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany (general biology, zoology, marine biology, chemistry),
- 1977 State examination for teaching at secondary schools (biology and chemistry).
- 1980 Ph.D. 1981: First engagement as "Akademischer Rat" (tenure) at the Fakultät für Biologie of the Universität Oldenburg. Responsible for scientific and technical management of the university's central laboratory for electron microscopy. Management of the diving group.
- 01.02.1983 - 03.30.1983 Antarctic expedition with RV "Polarstern".
- 1985 Expedition "Antarktis III" with RV "Polarstern" to the Weddell Sea.
- 1988 Organization of the first West German Diving Expedition to King George Island (Antarctica). Two further expeditions followed in1989 and 1990 in cooperation with the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil).
- 1988 "Habilitation" (thesis: "Evolution and phylogenetic System of the Isopoda").
- 1991 Position of professor for "marine zoology of polar regions" offered by the German Institute for Polar Research (Alfred-Wegener-Institut).
- 1991 Professor for "Systematik und Morphologie der Tiere" (animal morphology and systematics) at the University of Bielefeld.
- 1996 Head of the department "Spezielle Zoologie" (= Systematic Zoology) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
- Since October 2004: Director of the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn.
