Born 05.12.1949; studied biology at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen in summer semester, 1970, from winter semester 1970/71 biology and sociology at Freie Universität Berlin, Diploma in biology in 1976 (behavioural studies in squirrel monkeys, especially paternalistic behaviour), doctoral degree (Dr.rer.nat.) in biology in 1982 (Evolution of Criocerinae [Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae]), from 1983 until 1989 university assistant at the institute of zoology at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau; 1990-1992 editor of Herder-Lexikon Biologie vol. 10 "Biologie im Überblick", Herder-Verlag Freiburg i.Br.; April - September 1992 scientific referee for Badischer Landesverein für Naturkunde und Naturschutz in Freiburg (Badenian Regional Society for Natural History and Nature Conservation), from October 1992 curator of beetles at Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn, head of the entomological department and second vice-director of the museum. Habilitation in zoology (at
Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg) 1993, private docent at
Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn since 1994, appointed non-regular professor of zoology in 2001. Since 1995 Managing Editor, from 2004 until 2007 Editor-in-Chief of
Zoologischer Anzeiger, Editor-in-Chief of
Bonner zooogische Beiträge since 2002. From 1997 to 2000 chairman of the section for Systematics of
Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft (German zoological society), member of the board of the
International Society of Zoological Sciences from 2004 until 2008.
Since October, 2009, Researcher at Ernst Moritz Arndt-Universität, Greifswald.
Fields of work: Phylogenetic Systematics, Evolutionary Biology, Coleopterology, Functional Morphology, History of Science (especially Zoological Systematics).
Field work in Costa Rica in July/August 2005 and 2006
