Phylogenomics of Mammals - The Dawn of a New Era
Evolutionary and phylogenetic studies based on molecular data have developed rapidly during the last three decades. After single gene, and later complete mitochondrial genome analyses, it is now possible to reconstruct mammalian evolution on the basis of whole genome data: a field known as phylogenomics. The enormous amount of data promised to finally resolve the mammalian tree. Instead, the field encountered practical limitations to find fully bifurcating trees, and new ways to interpret the data, e.g. as networks, are emerging. As more genome data rapidly becomes available, it will be possible to trace evolution and adaptation on a whole new scale.
